Measuring Plate Tectonics

This unit explores new advances in the study of plate tectonics using state-of-the-art measurements of crustal motion using the methods of satellite geodesy. You will be able to measure present-day motions of Earth's tectonic plates and compare them with those predicted by global plate motion models and other geological observations.

We assume that you have had some background in plate tectonics theory. The Background Information section has supplemental information on plate tectonics, space geodesy and global positioning satellites (gps), vectors, and crustal motion vectors, etc.

The unit is divided into topics: Plate Boundaries, Earthquakes and Volcanoes, Absolute Plate Motion, and Relative Plate Motion. Each topic has a series of activities related to use of the JVV Jr. The tables are used for entering data during the activities.

It is recommended that you open the JVV Jr. by clicking on the link to the left and then go through the topics in order.
